The Tandana Foundation is seeking a volunteer to teach English and computer classes in a remote mountain village in the Otavalo canton of Ecuador. The volunteer will work with local teachers and elementary school students as well as community members of all ages. She or he will live at the school or with a host family and teach English and computer classes to grades kindergarten through 6th. The volunteer will also help coordinate a service and cultural learning expereince for a group of U.S. students that will visit the community for one week. Living in a mountain village, he or she will be immersed in indigenous culture and a basic lifestyle. He or she will also serve as a a cultural ambassador and a positive representative of The Tandana Foundation.
Requirements: • Conversational Spanish • Experience working with North Americans • Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse array of people, to solve problems creatively, and to promote a positive experience for all involved • Self-motivation, responsibility, and an ability to work independently •
Responsibilities: • Teach elementary English and computer classes • Represent Tandana in a positive manner to all community members and volunteers • Build relationships in the community • Help coordinate the experience of a visiting student group and ensure that it is a positive experience for the students as well as the community.
• The volunteer will have the opportunity to participate in unique cultural activities and worthwhile community projects. He or she must pay his or her own travel and living expenses. Teaching materials and cell phone will be provided. The intern will receive detailed orientation from a Tandana volunteer coordinator.
