The Salesians in Cape Town have a long history caring for youth and children. Salesians run holistic programs for the reintegration of street and marginalized youth into society through education and skills training and Job Placements.
There are 4 projects: 16+ Outreach programe, meeting youth and children on the streets, to build relationships, familiarize the youth with the projects available and encourage them to join one of the programs.
Residential programme: Providing accommodation for youth 18 years and older, whilst they attend one of the training programs. Youth come from outlying areas or are from vulnerable backgrounds or from the streets.
Learn to Live Special school of skills. 130 children of compulsory school-going age arrive each day from various shelters or directly off the street. Classes are held and a hot meal is provided daily. The school is registered with the Education Department. Basic numercy and literacy are taught and skills training in either welding, panelbeating, woodworkd or leathercraft.
Youth Employment program: Skills training includes bricklaying, tiling, computer literacy and office management and computer maintenance. All youth attend compulsory Life skills program. A job placement rate of 80% has been achieved in the last 3 years.
Waves of change programme: Providing 200 youth life skills and assistance given to gain access to jobs in the sea fishing industry. Jobs are confirmed and a further 400 youth are assisted with seamen's books, doctor's visits and accessing the sea fishing industry.
Responsibilities include:
1. Writing content pieces and instructional content including blogs, press releases, e-fundraising appeals, newsletters
2. Designing and tweaking layouts for donor report, e-newsletters, updates for donors
3. Creating and optimizing landing pages for the website
4. Developing new types of content from scratch to address problems or gaps in the communications and fundrasing strategy.
5. Creating, managing and evaluating all social media strategies and platform. This also includes monitoring and engaging with our online communities, as well as expanding our outreach.
6. Optimizing content for search engines and lead generation and conducting analytical projects to improve website strategies/tactics.
7. Developing and implementing keyword strategies to increase ranking and traffic.
Email Marketing.
Developing and managing email campaigns from start to finish, including planning testing and evaluating and reporting
Segmenting contact lists and personalizing emails
Growing our email list organically, not through bought or rented lists
Volunteer needs to have:
3 - 5 years of marketing experience
Exceptional writing and editing skills
Exprience managing social media accounts like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinedIn, Google etc with the ability to communicate in a consistent, on-brand voice.
Experience using social media, mass email and website analytic tools
Some basic design skills using tools like PoweerPoint, Photoshop, iMovie, Illustrator and inDesign.
Basic HMTL experience
Proficiency using Microsoft Office programs. Familiarity with Google Apps is a plus.
S/He must have:
Desire to work in a challenging environment with deadlines, competing priorities, moving parts and unplanned requests.
Have a tenacious personality and constantly willing to listen and learn to the staff and the youth attending each of the programs.
Have the drive to take projects to the next level with minimal support
Be adapatable enough to work independently and as a member of a team
Have excellent listening skills and be willing to take direction on overall massion and strategy.
