Digital Marketing Volunteer - Children's Literacy Program in Cartagena, Colombia

  • Cartagena, Departamento de Bolívar, Colombia

We have been fortunate to have many amazing volunteers at Fundacion AfroCaribe who have found their time very rewarding. Volunteers are well taken care of and appreciated. Because Cartagena is such a touristic place and has a unique culture, volunteers need help getting set up with accommodation and at the foundation, plus understanding the city and cultural norms. We accept all volunteers through Domino Volunteers and will send your contact information to them to start the process. Domino Volunteers will interview potential volunteers and, if accepted, support them in getting to Colombia and becoming fully established in Cartagena. They charge a fee, although it is the same if not less than what you would expect to pay if you arrive and establish yourself in Cartagena.

"Costs in Cartagena can add up quickly, so we definitely recommend Domino Volunteers to keep your living costs down and so you can dedicate your time to the project. It's also the safe and enjoyable option having a local team organize everything before your arrival so you don't spend half your time sorting logistics." -Margaret O'Brien, Program Director of Children's Literacy Program, Fundacion Afrocaribe

The team at Fundacion Afrocaribe have created some fantastic initiatives for kids in the areas of literacy and youth leadership. We are looking for someone who loves digital marketing to help manage and develop our website (Nationbuilder), social media sites, and and vimeo.

The literacy program is an afterschool program, reinforcing literacy and numeracy in children aged 6-14 and is delivered in libraries in the same neighbourhoods where the children live. These neighbourhoods are very close to the historic city center; however are classed as lowest socio-economic strata (Level 1 out of 6) and, additionally, have the lowest education levels. The staff is locally-based, comprised of an office administration team, teachers and social workers. The foundation has had many foreign and local volunteers, who also play an important role.

This role would mostly be located in the main office, which is in the most beautiful building in the center of the historic city.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Cartagena de Indias was established in 1533 as a Spanish colony and later a principle slave trade port. National sports teams, pristine beaches and coral reefs, more fruit than you could imagine, historic colonial fortresses, an amazing dance and music culture, festivals... there is something for everyone in Cartagena. This is a great way to live and experience a different culture, whilst using your professional skills to give back! You can also take Spanish classes, participate in local sport, dance the night away, lie on the beach, or take photos of the beautiful old town. There are also many of travelling options for weekends. Located on the Caribbean Sea, it is almost always hot and sunny, and the people match the climate with their happy, welcoming personalities. Volunteers are easily welcomed into the community and foundation; plus, it is easy to meet other foreigners as Cartagena is Colombia's #1 trouistic destination.

This role would suit someone with at least 1 year of digital marketing experience and at least a basic level of Spanish. This position is minimum commitment of at least one month, although you may never want to leave. You will have a lot of freedom to decide on a schedule for yourself; thus you will be able to really enjoy Cartagena and take time off to travel to other parts of Colombia. We look for volunteers on a rolling basis.

If you would like more of a feel of the programs, please head to VIMEO and search for Fundacion Afrocaribe or visit its most recent video athttps://vimeo.com/129891988. Also, check out their website (that needs to be updated with the help of a volunteer!), if you haven't already, to get a bit more information: http://www.fundacionafrocaribe.org/ You can also visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fundacionafrocaribecolombia.

We look forward to receiving your application! If we are interested, we will send it along to Domino Volunteers, who is responsible for all volunteers at our foundation and does a great job (more information below). Thank you!
