Social Media Specialist

  • Basel, Kanton Basel-Stadt, Switzerland

Send an email summarzing your social media experience and how you would like to contribute to our efforts to jamiedonahoe@checkorphan.org.

CheckOrphan is the leading news and information source for all rare diseases and orphan products with a strong presence on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Google+. It provides essential information for patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, industry and government. CheckOrphan is a nonprofit organization, thereby ensuring all information is freely accessible to benefit everyone.

We are looking for someone who can add a spark to our social media team, creating fresh content and delivering the news to our expanding global audience.

Mission

Our mission is to support the rare disease community by informing the world about rare diseases and orphan products and provide unique solutions that help to ensure there are more treatments for rare diseases.

Background

Orphan product status is given to drugs or products developed for rare diseases. The area of rare diseases is the fastest growing field in the pharmaceutical / biotech industry with many career opportunities.

There are over 7,000 rare diseases and they afflict over 60 million people in Europe and the USA alone. Only about 5% of the 7,000 diseases currently have a treatment. About 70% of people with rare diseases are children, and the majority of them will die before they are 15 years old. Rare diseases drive many families into poverty and collectively create a large socioeconomic burden.

Position(s) – SOCIAL MEDIA WHIZ

One of CheckOrphan's valued assets is its social media presence. As a news and information source, CheckOrphan has large amounts of information that need to be communicated through social media on a daily basis. The aim is both to inform people and to draw more people to CheckOrphan, thereby increasing our effectiveness. We also use our social media channels to support other entities and their efforts to improve the lives of people living with a rare disease. This aspect in particular is what many have found to be very rewarding when working with CheckOrphan.

Typical daily tasks include:

  • Message about the daily news, videos and events from CheckOrphan in our social media channels, primarily Twitter and Facebook
  • Interact with persons and entities in social media, with whom we are connected or are asking for our support for rare disease-related cause
  • Send news, events, videos and more to the team that you find in social media that has not been distributed on CheckOrphan
  • Connect with key persons and entities in social media that will help grow our network

Other tasks could include:

  • Research facts and statistics about rare diseases that we can share via social media
  • Create memes and infographics to maximise the impact of the information we share
  • Provide insight on how we could improve our social media efforts

This position is a volunteer position. You can work from anywhere, but if you happen to live in the vicinity of Basel, Switzerland, you are welcome to work with us in our Basel offices. We ask for a minimum commitment of three months.

You do not have to do this full-time. And you could do it in conjunction with a current employment, however, as you can appreciate, social media does require daily attention (Mon – Fri) or people find other sources – and we want to be a reliable source. Thus reliability and good communication are key to ensuring we improve CheckOrphan's outreach, while also supporting the rare disease community.

Your Experience

You might have finished or are finishing a degree in digital media, new media, communications / public relations and are looking for experience to find a job within the pharmaceutical industry, or you might be looking to revive or move into a career in PR or communications. Or you may just be really interested in helping out a great cause.

Your work with CheckOrphan will give you excellent insight and exposure to all the pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the rare disease sector, as well as non-profit patient organizations and foundations, public policy developments and upcoming research.
