Volunteer Opportunity description

Episcopal Service Corps (ESC) invites men and women in their 20s to engage in meaningful work at paid internships while living in Christian community.

Trinity Cleveland Urban Service Corps, the ESC program in Cleveland, OH, is an experiential urban immersion service program for young adults that lasts eleven months. The program is designed to provide participants with time, space, and resources to discern their futures and grow spiritually and as leaders while living in sustainable Christian community and working in Cleveland's social service agencies.

It is a rare time in Cleveland as the city is on the edge of a new identity (ingenuitycleveland.com). Just before the turn of the last century this was a top of the line place to be. Booming industry and dozens of millionaires living on Millionaire Row. Then it peaked with the end of the steel industry and lost its place in the race. Now it is becoming a mecca for postindustrial living: urban farming, innovative public education planning, green economies, community development centers (www.gcbl.org/2019). It also has quality arts and culture experiences at an affordable price (http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2011/08/feast_of_the_assumption_set_fo.html). The Greater Cleveland are has it all: downtown city night life, Amish country, acres of protected woodland, quiet suburbs, a bustling urban scene, beaches, and rural farms.

This video offers a good overview of what the experience is like: www.trinitywallstreet.org/webcasts/videos/profiles/anglican-communion-stories/capital-project-serving-others

Stipends are provided in addition to other benefits including housing, transportation, health insurance, and groceries. These positions are for young adults interested in community service, social justice, intentional community, spiritual and theological reflection, and vocational discernment.

Applications for the 2013-2014 year of service are now open. Trinity Cleveland Urban Service Corps requires a college degree and invites young adults of diverse backgrounds ages 20-29 to apply.
