Volunteer Opportunity description

Lyon-Martin Health Services has partnered with RTI, International for a project titled WHAM (Women's Health And Mindfulness). WHAM is community-based two-part intervention to improve the health of lesbian and bisexual women of size over 40.

This project is funded by a 2 year contract with the US Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Women's Health. We were one of 5 projects chosen in the country in a selective grant application including a sister-project in San Francisco hosted by Berkeley Policy Associates & San Francisco State University called "Doing It For Ourselves (DIFO)."

WHAM has two parts:

1. Training for healthcare providers on how to talk to lesbian and bisexual women about weight and its connections to health.

2. A 16-week support group for lesbian and bisexual women that includes mindfulness-based stress reduction, mindful eating, nutrition counseling and exercise.

How to apply

WHAM is currently looking for women to participate in focus groups to help give input on issues related to lesbian and bisexual issues, community and research participation.

To participate in the focus group you need to:

  • Self-identify as a lesbian or bisexual woman.
  • Be age 40 or older.
  • Feel that you might be at risk for weight-related problems.

This is a paid focus group study. A total of 4 focus groups will be held at Lyon-Martin Health Services.

When:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 5th 10:00a – 12:00p
  • Thursday, Feb. 7th 7:15p - 9:15p
