Volunteer Opportunity description

Volunteer Drivers needed to help cancer patients in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia county:

Did you know that hundreds of cancer patients in the Philadelphia area have no way of getting to treatment? One of the major challenges in the successful treatment of cancer patients is transportation. Every day, thousands of cancer patients face the struggle of securing reliable transportation in addition to their exhausting fight to beat cancer. Many treatments are missed because patients are unable to keep their scheduled appointments solely due to lack of transportation. As a result of the daily treatment regimen and tiring nature of the treatments, patients must rely upon others for their transportation needs. Often public transportation is too strenuous or unavailable. In many cases, a financial burden is placed upon family members who must arrange their work schedules to accommodate appointment schedules. Lack of transportation can leave patients with few options for completing their treatment schedules.

The American Cancer Society currently offers three volunteer driver programs that help patients get to the lifesaving treatment they need. Whether or not you have your own vehicle, you can help cancer patients in your community! Volunteer drivers are needed to transport patients to appointments on weekday mornings and afternoons. One of the great things about being a volunteer driver is that you can drive as little or as often as your schedule allows.

Don't want to drive? Volunteer coordinators are also needed to schedule rides for cancer patient. Work from home, day/time flexible, 3-5 hours per week. Need someone who is caring, reliable, organized, and able to respond to phone calls and emails promptly.

For more information about any of these programs, or to become a volunteer, please contact Debbie Gaynor at 888-202-1487 ext. 65140 or Debbie.Gaynor@cancer.org.
