VFPHAITI01-13 -EDUCATION AND CONSTRUCTION IN DUCHITY VOLUNTEERS FOR PEACE USA
Volunteers For Peace is collaborating with Vermont Haiti Project (VHP) (www.vermonthaitiproject.org), a small grassroots nonprofit that is based in Vermont and two locations in Haiti.
WORK:
Work options will be working with students in the local secondary school and working on the new vocational school that is being built in Duchity. Volunteers must be self directed for teaching in the local school. The students are very eager to have international guests share language, culture, music and more with them. We will work with you to help you plan for this. Construction work is difficult and it is often hot. Work will depend on materials and might be working with metal, concrete, building beds and shelves or painting.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD:
Volunteers will stay in the TCHAKA Inn in Port au Prince for the first few days. This inn is located in the home of the Duchity project organizers and is very comfortable. In Duchity volunteers will stay with families or in the vocational school. All meals are provided but are typical Haitian and center around rice and beans as well as fruit and vegetables that are in season.
LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY:
Duchity is a village in the mountains of Grand'Anse- about a 7 hour drive from Port-au-Prince. It is a beautiful location where life is simple and community focused. There is a lot to explore, the local market, friendly children and people everywhere.
REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteers must be self motivated and eager to engage with the people of Duchity. Knowledge of French or Creole very helpful. Can accommodate early arrival or later departure upon request. VFP does not provide insurance for this program and strongly advises volunteers to purchase travel insurance for their trip to Haiti. $500 registration fee + $300 fee, payable upon arrival.
