Volunteer Opportunity description

Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) is a small NGO based in Siem Reap, Cambodia working to alleviate poverty through access to basic services such as clean water, education, microfinance and community liaison programmes. Our programmes are developed as practical solutions and implemented at the grassroots level. JWOC builds on local capacity and increases self-reliance, in order that vulnerable communities are better prepared to face daily challenges.

We are currently looking for a Volunteer Education Assistant for a period of 3 months. The Education Assistant will work towards improving teacher capacity and the existing resources of our Free Classes Programme. Description of Duties

The Education Assistant will work directly with the JWOC Education and Volunteer Manager on a combination of teaching and capacity building goals. Specific responsibilities of the Education Assistant will include the following:

  • Teach an Adult English Conversation course;
  • Support teachers in refining the quality of their teaching to higher standard;
  • Participate in the review and revise process of Free Classes project curricula;
  • Other duties may include but is not limited to:
    • support learning and class experience of children;
    • assisting teachers by running games and activities; and
    • ensuring a fun and educational experience exists in the classroom.

Qualifications and Experience

  • At least 1 year professional teaching experience;
  • TEFL course or an education qualification;
  • Fluent level of English, both oral and written;
  • Experience working with young children is essential;
  • Experience planning educative lessons, materials and resources is desirable; and
  • Must be flexible and able to work on a variety of different tasks.

Compensation and Benefits

  • A stipend that will cover basic living costs, and assistance finding accommodation;
  • Paid visa on arrival;
  • Introductory Khmer lessons in the first week;
  • Experience working within a small community development organization.
