SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER WORK:
The Family Mentor volunteer will provide support to refugee families by helping to ensure successful basic skills in their new life in America. This position will assist with practical needs and assist with appropriate community resources.
Family Mentors provide friendly encouragement as refugees become familiar with American and local customs.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:
Assist refugee families in becoming familiar with the local Wichita community, including transportation systems (Wichita Transit bus system), grocery stores and restaurants, and recreational areas (ie: libraries, community centers, YMCA, etc).
Assist refugee families with managing household affairs (i.e. budgeting money, personal and home hygiene, teaching minor household repairs, etc.)
Assist refugee families with managing errands.
Assist refugee families with any special needs, making sure to coordinate when needed with IRC staff.
Assist refugees with practicing English language skills.
Other related duties as needed.
Commit to visiting the family at least once a week for a period of at least six months.
Be reliable and flexible.
Willingness to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.
Enthusiasm to learn about the family and interact on a regular basis.
Desire to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of clients.
Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
Commitment to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Ability to log volunteer hours via online tracking system.
