Looking for an international opportunity to utilize your marketing and communications skills? Interested in connecting local artisans to global markets? Volunteer for Awamaki and change lives in the Andes!

Volunteers play an essential role at Awamaki, as their work makes an enormous difference in our programs and in the lives of our women. Volunteers have the opportunity to gain essential experience in business administration, fair trade, social enterprise, ethical sourcing and design, marketing & communications, and non-profit management.

As a Communications and Marketing volunteer, you can expect to:

  • Tell stories about Awamaki's artisans and work through social media and blog outlets.
  • Create info graphics and social media strategies and manage accordingly to increase client traffic to Awamaki's social enterprise programs.
  • Support program operations, including managing workshop logistics, drafting target social media-related communications, and assisting staff as needed.
  • Market research and outreach to blogs and potential partner websites.
  • Create reports and tell stories for donors and funders.
  • Manage projects as assigned by Awamaki's Marketing and Communications Coordinator with creativity, initiative, and self-direction.
  • Work a minimum of 6 – 9 hours per week in Awamaki's fair trade store in Ollantaytambo.

Company Overview:

Located in the scenic Inca town and tourist destination of Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru, Awamaki is a Peruvian and U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that women's economic empowerment and community development through fair trade artisan cooperatives, sustainable tourism operations, and local community education.

Volunteer Program Costs

The current Awamaki volunteer fee for 3-month and 6-month volunteers is a one-time payment made prior to arrival of $1,392. Because Awamaki is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States, the majority -- $820 --is considered a donation and is tax-deductible in the United States to the extent allowed by law. As recognition of the value and importance of long-term volunteers, $700 is refunded upon completion of 6 months as an Awamaki volunteer.
