Buyala Community Nursery and Primary School is located in the rural slum village of budondo Jinja. This school started with a handful of pupils and has already grown to 210 pupils. They would need to continue expanding but up to 600 pupils but need additional facilities to do so. Previous to the establishment of this school, orphans and vulnerable children were not attending school and other were walking long distances to attend schools ie public schools. Losing a parent is traumatic for any child in any situation any where. In uganda where AIDS,Poverty and famine are part of every day life ,number of children are orphaned, homeless, hungry and others comes form broken families in which they are not properly cared for i.e. inadequate food, lack of clothes, Bear footed ever and inadequate scholastic materials. Our pupils, parents and staff are so fantastic, so welcoming, approachable, so wonderful, so happy, just to have interaction and attentions from the volunteers.
Here at school we don't only provide education but also opportunities for sports activities, feeding orphans ,provision of scholastic materials to orphans, community based training on food security, training of house hold on improved farming. For us we have mind that things move slowly in Uganda.remember that life in Africa is not organized and predicted as life in developed countries .We welcome you to buyala community primary School , we will give you the initial orientation and show you our program and you advise us accordingly. The way on how to conduct a lesson and teaching materials will be decided on arrival. This is just because Uganda education programme is a bit different from western programme.
The objective of the Uganda teaching program is to contribute to the academic development of poor local schools, in order to provide the best opportunity for Ugandans from poorer backgrounds to still receive quality education. Teaching at Buyala Community school is an experience not to be missed. Although our childrens' lives have been tough, they are extremely, polite, cheerful, friendly and are eager to learn. The presence of a mzungu (westerner) is always a great novelty for them. Volunteers are required to teach children ranging in age from 4-16 years. Typical subjects taught include – English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art and craft, and Physical Education. Schools in Uganda run for three terms a year. Although the school terms vary from year to year, they re approximately as follows: (Term One – January to March, Term Two – May to July, Term Three – September to November). There are short breaks between these terms in the months of April, August and December during which time volunteers can take a break, travel, engage in tourist activities such as safari, boat riding, ragid tarren, village walk, mountain climbing , or participate in another placement, (for example; volunteers can assist with the physical upkeep of the school such as painting, decorating and mending desks N.B. Volunteers DO NOT need to be a qualified or experienced teacher. Volunteers simply need enthusiasm, an open mind, caring spirit and a compassionate nature.
On behalf of the school administration ,children that we serve and on my own behalf, I wish to convey a warm greetings to you all.
You can apply to take part in our volunteer program by sending to us a mail.
