Based in Nablus, Palestine, this wonderful program provides educational and recreational programs to communities enduring the effects of violence and occupation, offering children, youth, and adult's safe spaces to learn, thrive and grow.
Our amazing local partner, the largest provider of free English classes in the West Bank with 1000 students enrolled per month, not only holds classes in a dedicated two-story learning center, but they also work closely with more than 40 community centers in refugee camps and other underprivileged areas in and around Nablus. This wonderful initiative allows local children and youth, who make up the majority of the pupils, to receive tuition completely free of charge.
Volunteers on this program work together with local teachers to provide Palestinian children and youth with educational programs important for growth and development. The main areas of education are languages, arts, technology, and sports. Class sizes are kept small to create an atmosphere that is positive and encouraging, and are held in a wide range of locations — community centers, libraries, private schools, refugee camps, etc. Volunteers may be teaching in any combination of these locations, or across the street from the volunteer accommodation in the two-story English Center, which houses several classrooms, a computer lab, and a lecture hall.
Volunteers from many different backgrounds and skill sets are welcome on this program, though some experience in teaching or working with groups of children is required. Volunteers will be expected to teach one of the core languages (English or French), but in addition volunteers are encouraged to share whatever skills they may have –- whether in the arts, athletics, or IT.
Volunteers must be able to commit to at least four weeks of teaching, must also be at least 18 years of age. In addition to these requirements, we generally look for volunteers who:
- are self-starters, with initiative and new ideas
- are responsible and able to work independently
- have some experience teaching or working with children, and ideas about how best to share their knowledge with students
- are willing to respect the local culture, even if it means making adjustments or sacrifices
- will be able to adapt to the challenges of a conflict environment
- have a genuine desire to contribute their time and skills
- want to make a difference in the lives of the children and youth of Nablus
Volunteer accommodation is provided in a beautiful historic Nablus home, across the street from the main project office and English Center. Male and female volunteers are housed on separate floors, as per local custom. Depending on the volume of volunteers, you may share a room with up to two others.
The apartment includes kitchen facilities, a washing machine, wi-fi Internet, and a television/DVD player. Volunteers are also currently preparing a beautiful garden as a place to sit, relax and drink fresh lemonade on those hot summer afternoons in Palestine. Food is NOT included in this program, and volunteers will be responsible for buying/preparing their own meals, or can venture out to enjoy the local cuisine.
Please note that this program is available all year long except for during the holy month of Ramadan (June 6th and July 9th 2016).
