Description

Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights is a service-based, human rights organization that provides housing, health care, human services, and human rights protections to the most poor and vulnerable people in our society, and uses its 118 years of experience to advocate for social justice.

Heartland Human Care Services' (HHCS) Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) Project provides English as a Second Language instruction, emphasizing language fluency and competencies that are relevant to the daily lives of the adult students served. The AVL project is an essential component of HHCS' Refugee and Immigrant Community Services (RICS) department. ESL and EL civics classes are held at the two RICS sites: the Belmont-Cragin and Ravenswood neighborhoods. Volunteers provide classroom, small group, and one-on-one instruction for adult learners.

RICS is currently seeking volunteers to instruct a beginning (pre-literacy) adult ESL class in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood. Volunteers are needed Monday-Friday, from 9-11 am.

Volunteers will provide classroom instruction for students enrolled in a beginning ESL course. Volunteers will be supported by ESL staff; teachers will provide volunteers with lesson plans and resources for each class.

Ideal volunteers will have experience with emerging literacy learners. Volunteers are asked to commit one or more days a week.
