Teaching volunteer program are available in Mombasa or Diani Beach (see Details page of location information). In Mombasa, volunteers can choose between regular primary or high schools, a special needs residential school or a language school for adults.

At the language school volunteers will be involved in planning and running lessons in English, German, French and Italian. The school runs on a total immersion basis so classes are run completely in the language being learnt. Ideally they would like long term volunteers so that students can finish a course of study under one teacher. It is possible for volunteers to take part in Swahili lessons while they are at the school. The aim of the school is to develop second languages in young adults in the community to open up opportunities for employment abroad.

At the regular primary or high schools volunteers will plan and run activities and lessons in their area of knowledge. This might be English lessons, Maths lessons or a sports activity. Volunteers will also assist the local teachers with lessons and marking. The schools are underfunded and lack resources so volunteers can also become involved in remedial reading and maths 1:1 with those children that needs additional help but miss out due to lack of staff.

The Special Needs School is extremely large with over 480 residential students. Some of the children are severely disabled and without this school would be at risk in the community due to being so vulnerable. The schools works with children with varying disabilities from Intellectual disabilities to vision and hearing impairments to cerebral palsy, Autism and Microcephaly. Volunteers can be involved in assisting teachers with lessons, spending 1:1 time with the children who need extra help, planning and running fun activities such as sports days and teaching vocational skills. The school would love to have volunteers with experience in speech therapy, occupational therapy, social work, Audiology or any other specialist area. But equally important are volunteers who are willing to spend time with the children.

In Diani Beach Volunteers can assist in various local schools. These schools are often in the poorest areas and are extremely underfunded and under resourced. Some do not have enough teachers for the number of classes they have. Volunteers can run lessons and activities, play with the younger children, assist with marking work, run teacher training sessions, help with cooking and cleaning. Most schools also have construction work that needs to be done as well. Most schools are primary aged children but high schools are available as well.

NOTE: When applying for this program, please select either 'Mombasa' or 'Diani Beach' in the Special Requirements section. Please also indicate the type of school you wish to work at. Programs in Diani Beach incur a fee of US$40 per week in addition to the listed program fee.
