Sadly, the Honduran education system simply does not function effectively. All too often classes are overly large and teachers routinely lack proper training and/or adequate supplies. The result being that many Honduran children, particularly those in rural areas, simply drop out by the time they reach the third grade.
In an effort to encourage and instil a love of learning and success in school, Love Volunteers, through our wonderful local partners, provides a variety of extra-curricular educational enrichment and healthy living classes to children and teens in the stunning beachside town of El Porvenir. Originally conceived as a program to encourage bilingual literacy in both English and Spanish, the program now also includes tuition in computers, math, creative arts and sports.
Volunteers on this wonderful project work in small groups at one of 3 locations around the community, all within easy walking distance from our volunteer houses. There are sessions for both elementary age children (grades 1-6) and also for young teens, and the program operates Monday thru Thursday in the morning and afternoon, as well as on Friday mornings. Volunteers are well supported since our on-site project managers facilitate planning and preparation for all classes and activities.
This is a highly varied program and volunteers are desperately needed to assist the local staff in many areas, therefore a flexible attitude is very important. Volunteer duties are likely to include:
- providing education life-skills lessons,
- organizing games, art and other fun educationally based activities,
- supervising sports, and playground games,
- providing learning support and assistance, and
- helping with basic chores, including kitchen work, cleaning etc.
Volunteers at this meaningful project work within an easy walk of our fully equipped and comfortable Volunteer Houses in the beachside town of El Porvenir, just 20 minutes west of La Ceiba. With fresh food easily available at the local markets, volunteers purchase and prepare their own meals and simply use the full kitchen facilities available in both volunteer houses. Alternatively, volunteers are welcome to enjoy the local Honduran culture and cuisine at several seaside restaurants available just a short walk from the volunteer house.
After work and on weekends volunteers are free to explore the local area, laze on the white sandy beaches or simply return to the volunteer house to relax and hang out with the other volunteers. All volunteer houses have filtered drinking water, hot water showers, 'western-style' toilet facilities, comfortable beds and Wi-Fi Internet access, which makes communication easy with friends and family back home or to keep the world updated on the progress of your volunteering placement!
While we accept volunteers for this program at all levels of fluency in Spanish, it is suggested that volunteers have at least a basic level understanding of Spanish prior to arrival. Practicing before you travel and immersing yourself in the community once you arrive is the key to success!

Want to learn Spanish?
Thanks to our awesome local partner, Love Volunteers is proud to offer volunteers on this project the opportunity to learn Spanish in a truly unique way. The 'Study Buddy' program is a one of a kind system of partnering local participants of our partners free English language classes, with an international volunteer who wishes to learn Spanish. The volunteer helps the local person learn English, and the local person helps the volunteer to learn Spanish, and class time is split 50/50 so both participants get an equal opportunity to learn. Better still, classes are only US$5 each, and 50% of this goes directly to your study buddy. This is a fun and engaging way to learn while directly helping to improve the lives of the local community members!
