Who: Teach English to adult newcomers from Mexico, Central America, Asia and all over the world. You do not need to be bilingual (but please let us know if you have language skills that could be helpful).
What: Our student-centered classes emphasize participatory language learning. Help students set goals and develop English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in pursuit of these goals.
When: Monday -Thursday 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm; Monday -Thursday 10:00 am - 12:00 pm (basic literacy assistance)
Commitment: Teach two hours per week for at least one semester (approx. 16 weeks).
Tutors begin their service with a comprehensive training designed to provide a toolkit of reading/writing and language learning strategies to apply with Durham Literacy Center students.
There are two steps involved in becoming a volunteer tutor.
First, attend one of our brief orientation sessions to learn about our different programs and which one is the best fit for you. Second, attend a comprehensive 12-hour training in the program that you choose. Tutors need not have prior experience in teaching to become involved in this work.
(1) Please attend ONE orientation at 1905 Chapel Hill Road from 6-7pm, on these dates for January 2013:
(2) Tutor Training (Tutors arerequired to attend all three dates):
Tuesday, January 22 (6-9pm)
Thursday, January 24 (6-9pm),
Saturday, January 26 (9am-3pm)
