Volunteer Opportunity description

Brief Description Vegetable & Fruit Gleaning.Volunteers will travel to the property of produce donors and harvest crops. Volunteers will then load food for transport to local emergency food providers. Work Site Variable; Gleans take place on both large and small farms, and sometimes even in people's backyards. Gleans center around Wenatchee, Chelan, Entiat, & Leavenworth. Time Commitment Gleaning events generally run between four and six hours long. However, while volunteers are encouraged to attend the entire event and participate in the celebratory closing snacks/treats, you will never be turned away for only being able to attend part of a volunteer event! Just let us know ahead of time and make sure to provide your own transportation! Responsibilities

  • Perform harvesting tasks.
  • Respect producers' property & crops.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform harvesting tasks, including but not limited to repetitive motions such as bending, lifting up to 40 lbs, and spend an extended amount of time walking on uneven surfaces.
  • Positive attitude & eagerness to give back to your community!

Training

  • Participation in a pre-service volunteer orientation with the Gleaning Coordinator.
  • On-site education on the proper harvesting methods for crops.
  • Understand Community Harvest's guidelines for Proper Produce Handling.

Community Harvest, a program of Community Farm Connection, is a regional gleaning project in the greater Wenatchee Valley. Community Harvest's vision of a healthy, self-reliant community includes access to fresh, locally grown foods for every community member. Community Harvest helps farmers manage excess and/or un-marketable products and makes gleaned produce accessible to the local community through the region's existing emergency food providers.
