The project is organized together with the Arts Education and Environmental Center in Kitui District since 2007. The Center was founded and registered under social services act with the aim of bringing together self help groups and individual businesses together to have a synergy effect on the community rather than groups working individually.
In 2003 the founders mobilized the formation of a youth group focusing on HIV/AIDS awareness, drug abuse, communal work and established contacts with Bee keepers from whom they learned the skills needed to run their own bee keeping activity. In 2005 the Arts Education and Environmental Center was formed and registered as a community based organization and since then it's running several programs that focus on Orphans and Vulnerable Children, Creative Arts, Youth Counseling, Rehabilitation, Entrepreneurship and Environment.
The volunteers will have an orientation in the beginning of the project to help them understand the objectives and expectations of the program. Volunteers will support the locals in their Agribusiness activities such as vegetable growing and bee keeping; Creative arts including poetry, dances, theatre, raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and malaria through arts in schools; Environmental works like tree planting, garbage collection, clean ups, etc.
Cultural exchange: There will be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, speeches, etc.
Qualifications: No particular expertise or skills required. Participants should have a positive attitude, be ready to adopt and enjoy simple living conditions, be flexible and patient. However, specialized skills and expertise (such as agronomy, business development, creative arts) will be used accordingly. If you like arts and social activates, this is the place to be. Volunteers are expected to be motivated to spend time with the community, to respect the people and the local culture.
Location: Kitui, located in the Eastern part of Kenya, approximately 150 km from Nairobi. Public transport is available.
Project dates: May 1 - May 21, 2014
