Who: Teach English to adult newcomers from Mexico, Central America, Asia, and all over the world. You do not need to be bilingual. (However, please let us know if you have language skills that could be helpful.)
What: Our student-centered classes emphasize participatory language learning. Help students set goals and develop English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in pursuit of these goals.
When: Monday-Thursday, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm, or Monday-Thursday, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm (teaching aide in morning preliteracy class)
Commitment: Teach a two hour class once a week for at least one semester (approx. 16 weeks).
Please attend ONE orientation session: January 8, 9, OR 13, from 6 to 7:00pm. RSVPs are appreciated.
After orientation, tutors begin their service with a comprehensive training designed to provide a toolkit of reading/writing and language learning strategies to apply in class with Durham Literacy Center students.
Training is mandatory. The spring semester dates are: January 21 and 23 from 6-9pm, AND January 25 from 9am-3pm. (If one of these dates cannot be attended, we can work with you to reschdule.)
