Social & Welfare Program

This program is orientated towards elderly people, fragile and humbled who live in grinding poverty, providing direct attention to them in their own place, by means of specific interventions which try to favor their permanence and integration into their own environment. This program attends old men (46 %) and women (54 %) of the urban sector of the communities of Concepción, Talcahuano, Hualpén, Chiguayante, San Pedro del Mar y Tomé, through domiciled visits. The frequency of these visits depends on their individual, familiar and social characteristics of these people.

The beneficiaries of the program live in poor conditions.

Program Includes:

Host family Accommodation. All meals included daily. Airport transfers on arrival and departure. Our local Project Coordinators will provide orientation, introduction and placement in a volunteer work project. Spanish classes can be arranged for you locally, if you need it.

The project coordinator is available 24/7 in case of emergency, health-related or otherwise. They can assist in arranging sightseeing excursion before, during or after the volunteer program.

La Serena, in northern Chile, is the country's second-oldest town. La Serena maintains a Spanish neo-colonial style according to the "Plan Serena" implemented by the Chilean government, which allowed the city to grow yet keep its own unique style. The heritage of the city includes over 30 churches, a romantic avenue of replica classical Italian statues, elegant colonial buildings and numerous gardens and parks. La Serena is a pretty colonial town with a population of about 120,000. It is the capital city of Coquimbo Province, located about 250 miles north of the Chilean capital of Santiago.

From here you can reach the Elqui Valley, famous for producing "Pisco", (the traditional drink of choice in the Andes), and for being one of the world's major astronomical centers due to its clear skies (Tololo, Campanas and Silla Observatories). The surrounding area has the greatest concentration of astronomical observatories in the world.

We offer the following programs in La Serena:

  • Program Length: From 1 week to 12 weeks

  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 hour per day
  • Accommodations: Local guesthouse or homestay
  • Meals: Yes, 3 meals a day

During the Program

You should be:

  • PROACTIVE - Jump in and maintain a positive attitude.
  • PATIENT - Life in your host country moves slower than one might be used to. Relax and enjoy the slow pace. Remember, not everything is as organized and predictable as life in the US or UK.
  • FLEXIBLE - Plans change, roads get flooded, and electricity goes out. Realize that not everything goes as planned, but good intention is always there.
  • CONSIDERATE – Respect those around you and be a reliable worker at the program site. Tell your host familyif you will be late. Advise the Project Coordinator if you are sick and can not work.
  • RESPECTFUL - Remember that the local people you are working with, side by side, do so with little or no salary. They do this work because they believe in it. There are times when you may not agree with or understand the organizations decisions or direction. Although your suggestions are always welcome, your faith, respect and consideration for their long term work and commitment is appreciated.
  • FRIENDLY - In order to truly help someone you must get to know them. Do not be afraid to make friends with the local people. Smile, wave and see how fast you are welcomed into the community.
  • TOLERANT - The food, the culture, the smells and the sounds will be unfamiliar to you at first. We recommend that you dive in and experience life head-on. You will be surprised at how quickly you will adapt.
