Volunteer Opportunity description

The D.A.A.N. Foundation has started this After School Program in the Badgaon village. The main aim of this program is to ensure that middle school youth, in the 10 to 14 years age group, have a strong foundation in English and Mathematics. The standard of education, particularly in these two subjects and for this age group, is declining at an alarmingly rapid rate in government schools in Rajasthan. Furthermore, the attitude of teachers and staff in these schools is one of indifference, and they are often absent from the class. Given that this is an important time for youth to be learning and assimilating new information, it is very worrying that they are receiving such poor quality education. In our after school program we hope to fill some of the gaps, using 4 different learning methods:

  • One teacher and a group of students
  • Youth pairing up and learning together
  • Group work
  • Individual students working on their own, with help from the teacher if needed

Therefore we are in search of volunteers who are interested in working as teaching assistants in this particular program. We are in search of motivated individuals who have strong english speaking skills. As well as individuals who have strong skills in mathematics.

Throughout this program, we hope to create an atmosphere of caring and compassion towards others, so that the youth understand the importance of sharing and helping one another. Youth will engage in team work, and will learn how to problem solve while forming strong bonds with one another and practicing their communication skills.

We will also conduct other activities to enhance the overall development of the youth, such as yoga and meditation classes. We will offer additional trainings depending upon the specific talents and skill sets of volunteers, for example music, arts and crafts, etc.

Volunteers pay a discounted rate for their room/board and food at the friendly family run Chandra Niwas Guesthouse, or a similar guesthouse accomodation.

The D.A.A.N. Foundation also asks volunteers for a one time donation of 5,000Rs (about $100 USD)
