Health care professionals and med-students have the opportunity to volunteer in remote areas of Zambia. They will be working alongside local hospital medical teams as they visit rural villages on regular outreach programs. There are several areas of focus, including HIV/AIDS counselling and treatment programs, clinics for under 5's as well as the pre-natal and general health clinics.

This is an amazing opportunity to experience first-hand how the main hospital in the Mwandi area is able to reach a population of more than 33,000 people, most of whom live in very remote small villages scattered over an area of approximately 400sq kilometers.

While working on the outreach programs volunteers need to be prepared to learn new ways to complete tasks and be willing to think outside of the box when working with patients due to lack of resources. This is a great opportunity for volunteers in the medical field to get experience in different areas of medical care and also to share learning and knowledge with the locally trained staff.

Volunteers also have the opportunity to work in the 60 bed hospital in Mwandi. The duties assigned to medical volunteers will be dependent on the individuals' interests and expertise. Local doctors and nurses will always be onsite and are happy to teach and share experiences with volunteers. It is common for rounds to take place in the morning, while the afternoon shift can be much quieter. Due to this, medical volunteers can also assist on the construction project in the afternoon, or depending on their skills and qualifications they can give presentations to the staff at the hospital or the community on any area they are equipped to handle. This might include:

Nutrition, Hygiene, Addictions, Counselling, HIV/Aids, Sexual and Domestic Abuse, Tropical Diseases, Building Self-Esteem in Children, Work with Children with Special Needs. The list is endless depending on the volunteer's area of expertise.

For volunteers who want to see up close and personal Western Medicine working in a real African village this is the place to come for an exciting and rewarding challenge.
