Volunteer Opportunity description

Adventurous volunteers are needed at Ganet's Adventure Primary School, Malawi.

Placements from 2-26 weeks

Semesters run from September to December, January to April and May to July.

The school currently teaches the Malawian government curriculum for Standards 5,6 and 7 (aged between approx 8 and 14). Ten subjects are studied, and most lessons are taught in English.

Facilities are basic, but the children are enthusiastic and the teachers dedicated. we now have two permanent classrooms. The children learn mostly in English, and are taught the Malawian government curriculum, learning 10 subjects.

In addition to working as a teaching assistant, you can volunteer at the school in a variety of ways depending on your interests and experience. These are some of the possibilities:

• Teacher • Working on permaculture garden or construction projects • Working on crafts and small business projects with the mothers group • Journalism – documenting life at the school

We recommend that volunteers stay at in Nkhata Bay, which is around 5km away from the school. Nkhata Bay is right by the beautiful Lake Malawi, and there are various backpacker lodges to stay at. From Nkhata Bay you can cycle or take a minibus to Mkondezi village. Living costs range from about $10 per day, although it for longer placements it may be possible to rent a house in Mkondezi village or Nkhata Bay, which would reduce this figure.

Nkhata Bay is a beautiful town on the shores of Lake Malawi, and is a stopping off point for ex-pats, backpackers and travellers of all kinds. In your spare time you can Scuba dive and snorkel with the tropical fish in the lake, hang out on the beach or visit national parks such as Nyika or Vwaza March.

The latest details about volunteering can be found on our website http://www.ganetsadventureschool.org/?p=550

Minimum age: 18

Volunteers need to arrange their own transport to Malawi and to the school near Nkhata Bay, and be self sufficient in Malawi. While the school's director will give help and guidance, volunteers are responsible for arranging their own travel, health insurance and visas etc.
