This program take place in the Nicaraguan National Zoo. This is the largest zoo in Nicaragua and also has the countries only animal rescue centre. The zoo is run by a non-profit organization, Fundación Amigos del Zoológico Nacional, and receives little government funding so relies on donations and volunteer efforts to remain open.
The zoo has seven distinct areas that you will have the opportunity to work in. These are as follows:
Bodega - Store Room / Food Preparation
Mariposario - Butterfly Garden
Centro de Rescate - Animal Rescue Center
Educacion - Education
Viveros - Green Houses N
eonatos - Baby Animals / Vet Clinic
Comida Viva - Live Food
You will work with the staff as they perform their daily duties. These vary with the area that you will work in but generally involved the preparation of food, feeding the animals, cleaning cages and work areas and general zoo maintenance.
There is also scope for groups to work in the zoo and take on larger projects that can only be completed with lots of willing hands. These projects vary according to the needs of the zoo so if you are interested please drop us an email and we can get you a current list.
You will always be paired with one or two staff members that will assign you tasks in their work area during the day. The work day starts at 7am and finishes at 4pm.
If you are studying veterinary science or are a vet then we can pair you with the zoo's head vet .Please get in contact with us via the contact details below so that we can contact the zoo management and arrange this for you.
The volunteers are placed in work areas by the zoo so Casa-Nica cannot guarantee working in any particular area. We do however have an excellent working relationship with the zoo.
Depending on the area that you are working you will have an opportunity to interact with the animals both in public display, in the rescue centre and in the Vet's clinic. Again depending on the needs of the zoo.
The zoo staff are friendly and welcoming and will be happy to have you work along side them. You will be included in everything they do including feeding the big cats and crocodiles.
The opportunity to take part in every aspect of running a national zoo with such a large collection of animals. Such an opportunity to work directly with such animals is not usually available it other such institutions.
If you have suggestions such as animal environment enrichment etc then they will be considered and likely implemented.
If you ever wanted to feed a tiger or look after an injured baby monkey this is your chance.
