Awamaki is looking for an individual to assist the Sustainable Tourism Coordinator in designing and implementing meaningful cultural experiences for tourists interested in the traditional Andean ways of life. Ideal candidates will have strong communications and social networking skills, work with minimal supervision, and take initiatives in leading and developing new tour options.

As a Sustainable Tourism volunteer, you can expect to:

  • Guide half-day and multiday tours.
  • Help coordinate tour logistics such as bookings, transportations, and payments.
  • Assist with research to develop new tour options within the surrounding communities.
  • Contribute to sustainable business management in areas related to marketing, pricing and packaging of tour offerings, improving information systems, and building donor relationships.
  • Work a minimum of approximately 6 – 9 hours per week at Awamaki's fair trade store in Ollantaytambo.

Company Overview:

Located in the "living Inca city" of Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru, Awamaki is a Peruvian and U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes community development through fair trade artisan cooperatives, sustainable tourism operations, and local community education. In particular, we believe that empowering the local women through successful market participation, as both consumers and producers, is linked to economic opportunities, growth, and improved well-being that result in lasting social transformations.

Volunteer Program Costs

The current Awamaki volunteer fee for 3-month and 6-month volunteers is a one-time payment made prior to arrival of $1,392. Because Awamaki is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States, the majority -- $820 --is considered a donation and is tax-deductible in the United States to the extent allowed by law. As recognition of the value and importance of long-term volunteers, $700 is refunded upon completion of 6 months as an Awamaki volunteer.
