Volunteer Opportunity description

The Community Law Project (CLP) conducts outreach to community-based organizations to raise awareness and provide access to services for survivors of domestic and gender violence in under-served communities such as marginalized Asian, African, and Latina immigrant communities, LGBT communities, and faith communities. CLP provides culturally- and linguistically-competent advocacy and representation in family and immigration law proceedings and utilizes education, training, and public policy advocacy to effectuate change in the systemic response to domestic and gender violence both locally and globally.

The Asian Community Family and Immigration Law Specialist of CLP seeks a motivated individual to assist her in various aspects of litigation support, case management for clients, outreach and training preparation, and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Compiling and entering data.
  • Participating in and assisting with the coordination of clients in Sanctuary-wide events such as the annual Back to School drive, Holiday Gift drive, etc.
  • Preparing materials for outreach and training.
  • Providing administrative assistance for CLP attorneys, including drafting letters, serving papers, mailing and filing court documents.
  • Providing case management for clients to meet the needs in the areas of education, housing, public benefits, employment, financial literacy, taxes, etc.
  • Accompanying clients to court or other agencies as an Advocate on their behalf.
  • Providing oral interpretation and written translation support for clients with limited English proficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Fluency in at least one of East Asian languages (especially Mandarin, Cantonese, or Fuzhou dialect) in addition to English.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Can commit to volunteering for 10 hours per week (for example, 5 hours per day/2 days a week) for at least 6 months (negotiable)
