Free Arts NYC is a non-profit organization that provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential. We are currently recruiting for two of our programs: Weekly Mentor and PACT.
Weekly Mentor is a 25-week arts-based mentoring program that facilitates small groups of children to develop a positive relationship with volunteer mentors as they progress through an arts curriculum. Parents and Children Together with Art (PACT) is an 8 week art making experience for families that encourages parent-child interaction as they collaborate and problem solve together.
What do Free Arts volunteers do?
- Mentors travel to community agencies, residential facilities and schools through Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn to bring Free Arts programming to the clients.
- Led by a professional facilitator, every session begins with an inspiration image and discussion of the week's project.
- Volunteers guide participants through the projects, providing support and encouragement, before ending the session with a sharing activity.
- Volunteers create regular opportunities for children and families to express themselves creatively, and to engage with a carefully chosen volunteer team who serve as positive, strong role models.
- Once placed, volunteers meet for 2.5 hours, one day per week for 8-12 weeks.
