Volunteer Opportunity – Board of Directors

  • Santa Clara, CA, US

To be considered, please contact IISME's Board President Kurt Krukenberg (email: kurt.krukenberg@gmail.com)

Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME) is seeking individuals who are passionate about STEM education, enthusiastic about serving their local K-12 community, and interested in an opportunity to help an established organization grow and thrive.

IISME is a Silicon Valley based nonprofit based that recently celebrated its 30th anniversary of providing transformational experiences for teachers through our Summer Fellowship Program. Building on this history of success, our leadership team has crafted an ambitious strategic plan to increase the impact of our programs and transform STEM education on a broader scale.

IISME is undertaking a major rebranding effort to launch a new name and new programs for Bay Area STEM teachers and their students. Our Board of Directors is actively supporting these strategic initiatives and recruiting like-minded business leaders, engineers, scientists, and educators who can help us further the mission, reach, and impact of the organization.

As we work to raise IISME's profile in the community, we are looking for new board members who can help us create awareness for our new brand, connect our staff with decision makers at local technology companies, and build our internal capacity for fundraising.

Requirements:

  • Excitement about our mission and the role of teachers in STEM education
  • Willingness to share expertise, new ideas, and professional network
  • Commitment to serving a three-year board term

Extra Credit:

  • Experience with individual giving campaigns and/or grant writing
  • Functional expertise in a discipline such as marketing, law, finance, HR
  • Domain knowledge of STEM education and curriculum development

Responsibilities:

  • Attend quarterly board meetings, either via web conference or in person
  • Fiduciary oversight of IISME and supervision of Executive Director
  • Actively participate in at least one board committee (e.g. operations, marketing, fundraising)
  • Be an advocate for IISME in the community
