Kenya has many orphanages which house HIV/AIDS orphans and children who have been abandoned by family members. Sadly, due to the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS, orphans are often neglected in Africa. The children volunteers come into contact with during their placement have been extremely disadvantaged by their circumstances and will have endured a great deal of hardship - much of it holding back their development.
We work with multiple orphanages around Nairobi which offer different experiences, for example one allows volunteers to live on-site, becoming completely immersed in orphanage life. Here most of the kids go to school during the day so volunteers will have time to themselves then and be busy mornings, afternoons and evenings. Another orphanage also runs a school so volunteers can help with the orphans' daily routine and then teach or assist the children that need extra help during school hours. Volunteers can also plan special activities and experiences for either of the orphanages - trips out, parties, sports days etc.
As an orphanage volunteer in Kenya you will be supplying much-needed attention, compassion, hope, encouragement, support and love to vulnerable children. As a result, you will be helping the children to become empowered to face the challenges of their life, poverty and possible exploitation. Voluntary work in a Kenyan orphanage is very fulfilling.
As this program involves working closely with orphaned and at risk children a three week minimum commitment is required to participate.
