Children's Program Volunteers (BRONX LOCATIONS)

Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading nonprofit agency dedicated exclusively to serving the needs of domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children. We offer a comprehensive, interconnected range of services including crisis and transitional shelter, individual and group counseling, legal services, economic empowerment services, a mentoring program, and a specialized program for children who have witnessed or experienced abuse.

Sanctuary for Families envisions a society in which freedom from domestic violence is a basic human right. We are dedicated to the safety, healing, and self-sufficiency of domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children.

Sanctuary for Families is currently seeking volunteers for our Children's Programs in our Bronx transitional shelter, as well as the Bronx Family Justice Center. Children's volunteers must make a commitment of once a week for at least 4-6 months.

Available Opportunities:

  • Sarah Burke House: Tutors and childcare volunteers for the after school program from 3:30-5:30pm Monday-Thursday
  • Bronx Family Justice Center – flexible schedule, daytime and after school volunteers needed for childcare and homework help

Responsibilities:

  • Provide childcare in a safe, educational and recreational environment
  • Communicate and engage with children one-on-one and in group settings
  • Assist with arts and crafts projects
  • Organize recreational activities
  • Assist children with homework
  • Help facilitate and create curriculum and additional activities with Sanctuary staff
  • All Sanctuary for Families volunteers need to complete a 2 hour orientation/training session (volunteers at the Family Justice Centers will need to complete additional training and clearance in advance of their start date)

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children
  • Availability at the specified times for desired placement
  • Must be able to commute to assigned location in the Bronx
  • Respect for confidentiality is a must
