Volunteer Opportunity description


Byte Back, Inc. is seeking several new members to join our board this summer. If you're interested, please read the position description below and contact boardinterest@byteback.org with questions or your resume. Thanks for your interest!

Byte Back

Byte Back's mission is to improve economic opportunity for low-income residents of the Washington D.C. area by providing computer training and employment readiness skills.

The goals of Byte Back are to:

  • Provide high-quality computer courses to unemployed and underemployed residents of Washington, D.C. and the surrounding communities
  • Supply job readiness assistance including preparing job interviews, developing resumes, and coaching throughout the job search
  • Assist unemployed and underemployed residents in obtaining employment that pays a living wage
  • Offer deeply meaningful volunteer opportunities to professionals, employees in the technology industry, and program alumni

Byte Back's full and part-time volunteers teach computer skills to over a thousand students annually. We are a two-time finalist for the Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management.

Board of Directors Statement

We are passionate about improving opportunities for the economically disadvantaged through computer literacy and job readiness skills training. We are committed to advancing the work of Byte Back by supporting the organization financially and through our advocacy efforts. Our Board promotes and represents Byte Back in the community.

Benefits of Board Membership

Serving on the board of Byte Back provides individuals the opportunity to become involved with and make a significant contribution to the Washington, D.C. community. Board members can develop their leadership and community building skills.

Requirements and Responsibilities of Board Members

  • Contribute in the three priority areas of the board:
    • Organizational governance and oversight
    • Strategic planning
    • Fundraising
    • Attend monthly board meetings (every other meeting is held via conference call)
    • Serve as a member of a board committee (such as Finance, Governance, and Strategic Planning)
    • Use personal and professional resources to promote the mission and work of Byte Back in the community
    • Adhere to all board policies

Board terms

Board members serve for two-year terms.

Necessary Qualifications, and Qualities

  • Demonstrated commitment to and concern for the mission and goals of Byte Back
  • Ability to work respectfully and productively with diverse individuals and as a team member
  • Ability and willingness to make a significant commitment of time
  • Significant experience with technology, nonprofits, or the community served

We are particularly interested in recruiting new members who have expertise in real estate or construction, information technology, finance or accounting, law, or fundraising.

Selection Process

Interested candidates should send their resumes, as well as any questions, to boardinterest@byteback.org. For more organizational information, please see our website (www.byteback.org). Selected candidates will be contacted and interviewed, then invited to serve on a board committee. The board will vote on new members in June, and invited members will join the board in July.
