Each year, as required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the District of Columbia conducts the Point in Time Enumeration, a count of homeless persons residing in the city on a given day. The next count will occur on Wednesday, January 26, 2011.
Outreach teams, community groups, volunteers, etc. will work together to cover the city looking in alleys, under bridges, behind buildings and in any known or unknown areas that homeless individuals might be sleeping in order to get a sense of how many people are living in places not meant for habitation.
Homeless advocates and staff from the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness are organizing this year's count, and are hoping to make it the most successful count to date. Using volunteers and professionals we aim to get the most accurate count of people sleeping outside. During the count information will be collected on a voluntary basis from homeless individuals in order to garner increased funding as well as make sure that the most responsive services are available to those most in need.
