Volunteer Opportunity description

The Project CARE literacy tutors help ABE and ESL learners reach their literacy related goals by providing individual and group tutoring sessions as well as necessary academic support. Literacy tutors work under the supervision of Academic Support Specialist. As part of the Adult Education Program, literacy tutors are expected to follow all policies and procedures of Morton College and the Project CARE office.

Responsibilities

  • Completing 12 hours of initial training
  • Meeting with student(s) at the scheduled time
  • Planning relevant lessons with the learner's goals in mind
  • Preparing weekly reports on each learner or class and forwarding all information to the office at the scheduled time
  • Reporting changes with attendance, level of participation, and contact information
  • Communicating with the program coordinators regarding any issues I might have
  • Following all other policies and procedures of Morton College Project CARE office.

Qualifications

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be able to volunteer 3 hours a week for 3 months
  • Be willing to complete 12 hours of initial training
  • Be sensitive to the needs of the local community

We have the following types of positions available:

Group Tutor

Provide small group tutoring to students in the ESL and ABE programs and prepare creative lesson plans in accordance with the established curriculum and content of ESL and ABE levels. Administer exams and student performance, with the goal of advancing students through our levels and passing them to the programs. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, testing, goal assessment, evaluation, and writing samples.

Tutoring Aide

Assist a classroom teacher in the general supervision and reinforce the instruction taught in the classroom to students. Other assistance might include: reviewing class material, discussing the text, or working on solutions to problems.

One-on-One Tutor

Provide individual tutoring to students in the ESL and ABE programs and prepare creative lesson plans. Assist students in improving academic achievement by meeting with them on a regular basis. Help students solve their learning problems and work on study skills.

  • All literacy tutors must be sensitive to the circumstances of Morton's students and the goals of the ESL and ABE programs. It is very important that ESL and ABE instructors have enthusiasm and a positive outlook towards the Project CARE. Instructors and literacy tutors should work together with the intention of helping students to improve their English and develop a sense of community in the class.
