Court Advocates provide legal accompaniment and advocacy in local courts, assistance in filing compensation claims with the NYS Office of Victim Services and referrals to other helping agencies. Advocates identify and speka to victims of crime when those victims attend the arraignment of their offender. They are expected to provide emotional support for the victim and be able to answer the client's questions about the criminal justice system.
Court Advocates are required to complete training which will be provided by the Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center through online training and shadowing of staff members in court.
