Youth Challenge International (YCI) is recruiting a team of eight Youth Discovery volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 with diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds for a four-week focused environment and conservation project in Palmichal of Acosta from February 9- March 9, 2013.

Overview:
The community of Palmichal of Acosta is not only known for its beauty, but also for its resilient residents who dared to take action. In 1991, fifteen neighbours sought to protect the forest of the basin Nacientes Palmichal, which is formed by the Negro and Tabarcia Rivers. Through their collective efforts, an association was formed and transformed a once underserved area into the first Natural Monument of Costa Rica.
Today, environmental awareness and education serve as pillars of this community. Palmichal is often revered for its scenic qualities, which boasts primary forests and pristine waters. Nacientes Palmichal's close proximity to the Costa Rican Capital, San Jose has made it a favourite of eco-tourists.
Key Activities May Include:

  • Strengthen environmental education through organizing environmental awareness campaigns in local schools, in partnership with community leaders and youth
  • Support sustainable park development initiatives though engaging in small-scale rejuvenation activities including trail maintenance, enhancing green areas etc
  • Support community led agro-forestry initiatives including tacking out pine trees and other foreign species
