Volunteer Opportunity description

Are you a dynamic, motivated college student that wants to make a difference in the lives of high school students? Apply to volunteer with Let's Get Ready! We are a non-profit organization that provides intensive SAT preparation, college application guidance, and college success support to low-income and first generation college-bound high school students. Now is your chance to promote social justice, work with high school students, meet other like-minded undergraduates, and hone your leadership skills. Apply to coach one night a week at our Brooklyn location!

Responsibilities as a coach:

Qualifications

  • Have an SAT score of 600 or higher in the subject they want to teach
  • Tutoring experience ideal, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Volunteer to work with 5-7 underserved high school juniors
  • Serve as a mentor to high school students
  • Prepare high school students for the Math or Critical Reading/Writing Sections of the upcoming SAT
  • Help students better understand the college admissions process and assist on completion of key components of their application

What's in it for me?

  • Meet other like- minded college students, interested in community service, education, and social reform.
  • Intensive teacher preparation, where coaches are responsible for a class of 5-6 students from the beginning to end of the semester. Guided practice creating lesson plans, teaching specific concepts, leading interactive class activities, assessing weaknesses and evaluating students. Receive critical feedback and strategies for improvement.

LGR coaches are actively recruited by organizations like Teach for America, City Year, Uncommon Schools, NY Teaching Fellows, Private Prep, and Inspirica.

  • Participate in a student's critical journey from high school to college, and play your part in ending the cycle of the poverty.
