It is an incredibly rewarding experience to volunteer in an orphanage in Ghana. Over 170,000 children in Ghana have been orphaned by the AIDS epidemic alone. Many more children have lost their parents to accidents and other illnesses. ELI works with orphanages throughout Ghana that provide food, shelter, and education to thousands of children who have been orphaned, abandoned, or found living on the street. The children receive basic care but are lacking the attention from adults necessary to thrive. Volunteers will help with the daily activities of the orphanage including feeding the children, leading activities, helping with homework, and other activities. All the school-aged children attend local schools with the neighborhood children. While the older children are at school, volunteers will assist the house mothers with the younger children and chores in the orphanage. The most successful volunteers are flexible and able to adapt the daily activities to the given day--remember each day is different!
