Do you want to have a hand in shrinking the educational gap in DC? Do you want to have a lasting, positive impact on someone's life (and the lives of their children)? Help break the cycle of illiteracy and poverty by tutoring an adult student at the YWCA!
The YWCA's 'Positive Transitions' program is an adult education program that offers classes for GED preparation and job readiness. We currently have a great need for volunteers to tutor our students in the GED content areas: math (up to a pre-algebra level), reading, writing, science, and social studies. We are particularly in need of math tutors who have weekday availability during the late afternoon hours (between 3 and 5 PM) or in the early morning hours (between 8 and 9:30 AM), although all times and subjects are needed.
A qualified tutor would be committed, energetic, patient, and proficient through the high school level in the subject(s) he/she wishes to tutor. The tutor's duties would include:
1. Working one-on-one with an adult student on basic academic material to improve learner's comprehension and application of material learned in class
2. Update YWCA teachers on your learner's progress
3. Work with YWCA teachers and staff to provide the best educational plan for your tutee
Our students attend daytime classes Monday through Thursday. We need tutors for both the daytime and evening hours. The average time commitment is one hour a week, although you are welcome to meet with your tutee more often!
