The Portland Housing Authority needs volunteers for their three Study Centers. We are looking for reliable people to volunteer with a diverse and enthusiastic group of students from all grades. Our centers run from 3:00-7:00 Monday through Thursday in three different neighborhoods. You will be providing much needed homework support for students of all ages working to succeed in school. There is also availability for volunteers seeking to work with high school students on college prep, as well as opportunities to read to the youngest attendees. Opportunities are also available for volunteers interested in artistic (or other special skills) programming.
The centers provide a safe, supervised, and supportive environment for kids of various cultural backgrounds. It is a unique and rewarding opportunity to get involved in public housing neighborhoods. Prospective tutors who are interested in literacy and ELL teaching, secondary-level math and science, or the success and support of the Portland refugee population are particularly encouraged to volunteer.
Minimum commitment is a weekly 2-hour block of time Monday - Thursday between the hours of 3:00-7:00 P.M. Volunteers must be willing to have a police background check and be free of any felony convictions. The preferred minimum age for tutors is 20. Potential volunteers must complete all paperwork before volunteering.
