The ESL program is a volunteer tutoring opportunity run by the IRC in Silver Spring. As a volunteer in the program, you will visit the house of a family or individual that recently arrived in the U.S. Your role will be to help them with English and build the confidence to utilize English in their everyday lives. While all of our clients are eligible for ESL classes, sometimes extenuating circumstances prevent them from attending. As such, tutors often replace or supplement the ESL classroom. For this reason, our ESL tutoring program is designed for volunteers with a background in teaching/tutoring ESL. The experience is wonderful and unique. Many times tutors and their ESL learners create lasting bonds.
There is no set curriculum for the program but we do have links to online and hard copy resources that can enhance your own lesson planning. Our learners vary from preliterate to advanced, intermediate and sometimes fluent learners.
The time commitment is a minimum of two hours a week, not including lesson plan preparation time, or travel time. Whether it is twice a week for one hour or two hours one day is up to you and your student to determine. However, the overall length of the commitment is a minimum of four months.
If this program sounds like a good fit for your skills, interests and abilities, please contact VolunteerSilverSpring@Rescue.org. We greatly appreciate your willingness to volunteer with us. It is a truly rewarding experience working with the clients.
