Volunteer Opportunity description

To honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the American Red Cross of Northwest Florida is bringing together local volunteers for "A Day On...Not a Day Off" this MLK Day.

Who: Volunteers, Teens (15+), Community Groups, and anyone else interested in making our community safer. No special skills needed! Volunteers will be provided with instructions and training on site. You can stay with your group or meet new people who care about making the community safer!

What: Groups of volunteers will canvass door-to-door throughout a neighborhood that experienced several fires over the past year. They will talk with residents and leave behind door hangers with safety information. The door hangers include information about smoke alarms, creating a household fire escape plan, and tips for cooking and heating a home safely this winter.

When: Monday, January 21, 2013, 9 AM to Noon

Where: Meet at the Northeast YMCA, 3215 Langley Avenue in Pensacola, FL. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Why: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recognized that strong families and communities make dreams come true. The Red Cross and our partners want to honor that legacy by keeping our neighborhoods safe.

When the weather gets colder, the potential for home fires increases as people try to heat their homes and stay warm. Educating the community about safe heating methods and the importance of working smoke detectors can go a long way in preventing disasters and saving lives.
