Community Education Consultant

Description

Community Enterprise Solutions is seeking an individual with experience in education and youth programs to support our educational center (the Centro Explorativo) in the small community of La Pista, in the highland town of Nebaj in Guatemala. In order to work effectively with local staff members and accomplish meaningful project work, we are looking for a minimum six month commitment, starting between January to May of 2013.

This year, we are looking for someone to work together with our staff in the following three areas:

1. Support Centro classes and programming

Our dedicated staff is constantly looking for fresh ideas to reinvigorate our after school programs. We would like a volunteer to help develop curriculum and interactive activities for classes in:

• Computer skills
• Nutrition & healthy cooking
• Music
• Reading and creative language arts reinforcement

2. Develop innovative strategies to involve more adolescents at the Centro

We need support in reaching out to older children and adolescents in the community through the following:

• Visits to local schools to promote the Centro
• Incorporating local youth as leaders in after school classroom programs
• Involving more youth in a weekend environmental action group & sports program
• Making library and informational resources more accessible and attractive to older students

3. Support the development of the Centro Explorativo website, publicity, and outreach

We would like to improve the Centro's online presence to attract more visitors, volunteers, and potential donors through the following:

• Update existing website (http://www.centroexplorativo.org)
• Generate new eye-catching photos and images
• Make the site bilingual in Spanish and English (currently only in English)
• Support the Centro director, Virgilio, in learning to use the Wordpress platform to publish news updates

Compensation:

Housing will be provided live in the town center of Nebaj, about a 15 minute bus ride from the Centro Explorativo. The accomodations are in a local hostel that includes a kitchen with refrigerator, stovetop, and basic pots, pans, and utensils, as well as hot water showers and a living room with television. The volunteer will be resposible for their own food and other living expenses, however all work expenses will be covered by the organization.

Job Requirements:

Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills

Self-motivation and ability to take initiative and ownership of work

Willingness to live and work in rural Latin America

Willingness to learn, co-exist and work in a new culture

Desire to effect positive change in rural communities in Latin America

Advanced Spanish fluency (English fluency is preferred but not required)

Preferred Experience:

Experience in education and youth programs

Experience in graphic design, web design, and/or photography

Experience with the Wordpress blog platform
