One Island is a learning center on an organic farm situated in a unique micro-climate where many, many different foods can be grown. However, the region is mainly known for the two current dominant crops of macadamia nuts and coffee.
One Island's learning center is partially comprised of demonstration theme gardens and orchards growing dozens of different foods and medicinals. We also operate a 4500 square foot green house.
We endeavor to farm enough food to feed the One Island crew and sell enough to cover farm expenses; however, we are not there, yet. And, that may be where you come in.
Other revenue streams, such as tuition, eco-tourism events and facilities use fees from outside groups and movie night doations, etc. are also developing.
The 77-day stay farm work exchange offers a 'deluxe' rustic tent platform, shared outdoor shower, kitchen and composting toilets. The Learning Center offers solar powered electricity and wifi. A basic vegetarian pantry is maintained for guest access.
One element making farming as part of the One Island Crew unique is the activity around the Learning Center. And, while going to market with our booth is not part of what's expected from you, it is another great way to contribute to the non-profit endeavor, meet people, and learn other aspects of what it takes to earn a dollar farming here in rural West Hawaii.
