Volunteer Opportunity description

Who are you helping? Adult students with the following types of goals: learning to read for the first time, improving their reading ability, helping their children/grandchildren with homework, understanding more about their jobs, or preparing for a GED program.

What are you doing? Tutors meet one-on-one with students twice per week to reach literacy-related goals using strategies and curricula provided during tutor training.

When do you meet? The DLC is open Monday-Thursday from 9am to 12pm and from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. Minimum commitment: 90-minute lessons twice per week (3 hours total per week). Lesson schedules are based on the availability of each tutor and student.

How to apply

Tutors begin their service with a comprehensive training designed to provide a toolkit of reading/writing and language learning strategies to apply with Durham Literacy Center students.

There are two steps involved in becoming a volunteer tutor:

Please attend ONE orientation from 6-7pm, from the following dates for January 2013:

  • Wednesday, January 9 (6-7pm)
  • Thursday, January 10(6-7pm)
  • OR Monday, January 14 (6-7pm)

Location: 1905 Chapel Hill Road, Durham NC 27707

(2) Attend a comprehensive 12 hour training. Tutors need not have prior experience in teaching to become involved in this work.

Tutor Training (Tutors are required to attend all three dates):

  • Tuesday, January 22 (6-9pm)
  • Thursday, January 24 (6-9pm)
