Created on: December 14, 2010

Posted by: International Volunteers Network, Inc

Description

Volunteers needed for nursery and primary school levels (ages 4yrs-17yrs) to teach English and other subjects. Teaching experience is not required.
With the introduction of Universal Primary Education (free primary school education) in Uganda, the Uganda Government was faced with a dilemma. A large amount of students entitled to an education and a comparative lack of teachers. Teaching at a Ugandan community school is an experience like no other. Although their lives have been harsh, the local children are extremely cheerful and friendly and will be eager to learn, as well as finding out more about you and where you come from. You will find that children are very polite and well behaved and friendly. Typical subjects taught include – English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art and Physical Education. Your investment into the children's education will not only bring a smile to their faces, but will create a lasting constructive future for each child, their family and the society at large. Normal school hours are 8am–4pm.
School in Uganda runs for three terms a year although the school terms vary from year to year but are approximately as follows: (Term One – January to March, Term Two – May to July, and Term Three – September to November). There are short breaks between these terms in the months of April, August and December during which time volunteers can take a break, travel, engage in tourist activities such as safari, take tutorials (holiday classes), particularly for slow learner- students, or participate in another placement, e.g., volunteers can assist with the physical upkeep of the school; painting, decorating, mending desks etc. N.B. Volunteers DO NOT need to be a qualified or experienced teacher. Volunteer simply need an open mind, caring spirit and a compassionate nature.
The objective of this program is to contribute to the academic development of the school in order to provide the best opportunity for the orphans to receive quality education. Volunteers support the local teachers; encourage students to learn and play and instill pride in their schooling.
