Volunteer Opportunity description

Thresholds of Chester County is actively and ALWAYS looking for volunteers who want to teach a 6 step decision making program to both male and female adult inmates during 8 week cycles of the Thresholds program throughout the year. Cycles take place in Spring, fall and winter with summers off, and volunteers can pick which cycles will work for their schedule with no obligation to provide more that the committed cycle, but we are truly looking for long-term volunteers who are open to volunteering for at least one cycle per year. During the cycle, volunteers will meet with their assigned inmate-student once per week for about an hour and a half in order to reinforce the decision-making step that is simultaneously being taught in group sessions by other volunteers who are called "Macro" teachers. All volunteers are required to go through a weekend training session to be taught the Thresholds philosophy, 6 step process, and to be given tools that workbooks that will be used during cycles. The cost of the training weekend is $35 which is a one time cost of membership with Thresholds and covers the costs of the training weekend. All volunteers are able to volunteer as Macro teachers, or to teach within the Youth Detention Center and shelter, but must do at least one cycle with adult inmates first. Inmates are located both in the men and women's prison, as well as the women's work release center.

THE NEXT VOLUNTEER TRAINING WEEKEND IS MARCH 23rd and 24th 2013 (Saturday 9-4 with lunch provided, and Sunday 9-12:30 no lunch) at the Government Service Building in West Chester. Please email/call to register beforehand.

*YOU MUST BE 21 YEARS OR OLDER, AND UNDERGO BACKGROUND CHECK BY THE PRISON IN ORDER TO GAIN ENTRANCE TO PARTICIPATE WITH INMATES. YOU MAY NOT HAVE ANY RELATIVES OR CLOSE FRIENDS CURRENTLY INCARCERATED AT THE CHESTER COUNTY PRISON.**
