On this program volunteers work with vulnerable children in orphanages in either Mombasa or Diani Beach. In Mombasa the local team work closely with two orphanages/schools in the community. One is a smaller children's home with 25 children from ages 2-14 years where volunteers can assist with teaching the toddler's class during the day and planning activities and trips out for the older children. The other option is a larger orphanage and school with 38 orphans and 200 students at the school. Here volunteers can run classes and activities in both the school and orphanage. Both orphanages would appreciate volunteers with experience in social work, counselling, construction, building, behaviour management and working with special needs children.

Volunteers can chose to work with children at a local orphanage in Diani Beach, about an hour from Mombasa (see Details page for location information). The orphanage is run by a Reverend and has strong religious values. There are 58 children aged from 4yrs-23 years at the orphanage. Volunteers can be involved in teaching the youngest children, plan activities and trips, fundraise, complete construction projects, paint, clean, help with homework and chores. The children have formed a band and visit tourist hotels to raise some money. Volunteers with musical knowledge could assist with this.

The orphans you will come into contact with during your placement have been extremely disadvantaged by their circumstances and will have endured a great deal of hardship - much of it holding back their development. As an orphanage volunteer in Kenya you will be supplying much-needed attention, compassion, hope, encouragement, support and love to vulnerable children. As a result, you will be helping the children to become empowered to face the challenges of their life, poverty and possible exploitation. Voluntary work in a Kenyan orphanage is very fulfilling.

NOTE: When applying for this program, please select either 'Mombasa' or 'Diani Beach' on the Special Requirements section. Programs in Diani Beach incur a fee of US$40 in addition to the listed program fee.

NOTE: As this program involves working closely with orphaned and at risk children a three week minimum commitment is required to participate.
