Salary: Unpaid volunteer with potential compensations in terms of paid travel opportunities to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

AMURT-Haiti (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) is an international humanitarian and development organization based in Haiti working to eradicate poverty and create opportunities for everyone to realize their potential using rights based strategies. Founded internationally in 1968 we have been active in Haiti since 1986. AMURT-Haiti's mission is to reinforce local capacities through a participative approach while promoting Universal values. Our long-term development initiatives are focused in three domains: Innovative Education, Social Entrepreneurship, and Environmental Transformation.

Summary Job Description

AMURT-Haiti relies on generous volunteer support for many aspects of our operations. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced volunteer web designer and programmer willing to devote a small amount of time to make a big impact on our online presence.

This is a great opportunity to strengthen your design experience and build your portfolio in a professional and meaningful way. We need a web developer to help make our website more user-friendly, create compelling user experiences that drive and keep traffic to AMURT-Haiti's website as well as help us build out and re-launch our website. We are looking for a developer with a fine and creative eye for the latest dynamic web design innovations and features, someone who understands the connection between structure, flow, and social and aesthetic aspects appealing to a variety of visitors.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential

  • 2 years of web development experience, preferably with the entire website development process from product conception, design and development to release
    • Knowledge of web architecture, site implementation, and underlying database applications associated with a dynamic website
    • Good understanding of how consumers and users interact with websites and an eye for the latest innovations
    • Excellent knowledge and understanding of HTML, XHTML, PHP, JavaScript and CSS
    • Demonstrable experience of working in a web development role
    • A portfolio of past work illustrating previous experience and skills
      • Strong understanding of social media, web 2.0 technologies, and digital strategy
      • Ability to work remotely with your own computer and software

Desirable

  • Experience of digital development within a charity or non-profit
  • Knowledge of Hoote Suite and other content management software
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics and other web statistics tools
  • Ability to design and create images in Adobe CS - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign or GIMP (for web designers)
    • French or Haitian Creole language skills a bonus

Personal Skills

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
    • Organized, with good attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines
    • Ability to respond well to guidance and work well in a team environment

Job Duties:

  • Design the graphics and overall layout of the pages of the website
  • Test webpage's to ensure full functionality and adherence to organizational requests along with content creators before launching Complete Analysis and Testing of site
  • Creation of site layout/user interface from provided design concepts by using standard HTML/CSS practices
  • Submit the site to all major search engines
  • Teach Haiti staff how to update Web pages to ensure site accuracy and currency over time
  • Develop and communicate Web site usage and security policies and standards to users
  • Incorporate web-based applications that cater to mobile devices
  • Utilize multimedia applications; streaming technologies and optimization techniques for minimizing bandwidth while ensuring browser compatibility
  • Perform routine site maintenance as needed
