Childcare Development and Rehabilitation Home for Boys - Northeast Thailand
The Home concentrates on behavioral problems, neglect, physical and mental abuse, broken family and violence problems. The children have very low self-esteem and low IQs for their age. Volunteers who have a background working with disadvantaged children are especially welcome.
The areas of teaching are basic Thai subjects with emphasis on positive "fun" learning by doing such as sports and arts. In addition, the facility has an "On Air" room for kids to play as a DJ and play music and talk. The boys also garden and play on the large outdoor sports field. Very rewarding for the right volunteer who is prepared for challenging but rewarding work with these boys.
Volunteer tasks may include teaching and playing sports and music, reading books, playing games, and doing art/drawing.
Volunteers have a choice of accommodation. They are welcome to stay at the Openmind Projects Training Center with other volunteers, our local trainees and staff. The Center consists of two buildings, with simple Thai style bedrooms for volunteers, trainees and staff and showers in both houses. Air conditioning is available at an extra charge. Staff, trainees and volunteers help to clean the rooms.
You bring your own bed sheets and towels as well as any hygiene articles that you feel you may need. A sleeping bag is useful during the cool season (November - February).
Volunteers have their own office with PCs, internet and 24/7 wireless for those who bring their own laptops. There is a small library in the training room with books on travel, volunteering and teaching in addition to fiction. The staff have a separate office. Outside you can find terraces with a Thai style kitchen, small garden, tennis court and TV with DVD player.
A local bus will take volunteers from the Training Center to the hospital.
Alternatively, they may choose to stay with a host family in the village.
Lunch is provided with the staff at the hospital, and dinner with either the host family or at the Center (during the week).
Nong Khai is a town in the heart of Indochina and on the shores of the legendary Mekong River, with the Friendship Bridge linking Laos to Thailand and the rest of the world: Vientiane, the capital of Laos, is just a 30 minute drive from Nong Khai!
In Nong Khai, you find places and people where life really is like the romanticized images of Thailand. Walk along the streets of Nong Khai or along the river; soak up the exotic Indochinese atmosphere; eat at one of the many Thai, Isan, Vietnamese, Chinese, or even Western (farang) restaurants. Food is easy to find, delicious, and cheap, from 25 Baht upwards!
You'll find many temples in Nong Khai including the royal Wat Pho Chai with its legendary Golden Buddha from Laos. Another sight not to be missed is the Buddhist/Hindu inspired Sculpture Park, Sala Kaeow Khu, unique in Thailand.
You can practice many sports, such as jogging in the nearby water park, swimming, tennis, badminton, soccer, petanque and volleyball. Perhaps you want to try the very local nightlife? Listen to Isan and Thai pop and rock performed by local artists. Our staff will show you.
Go on excursions along the Mekong River! The valley drive east of Nong Khai is considered by many to be among the most scenic in Thailand. Go jungle trekking in the Phu Wua Mountains in Thailand or Phu Khao Khouai in Laos, two of Openmind Projects' eco projects: swim in the waterfalls, track wild elephants and stay overnight with charming, local host families.
